We created storyboards, designed and made our boxing rings for Cuthbert and his opponent, then we used stop go animation to film a short boxing match. We used iMovie to insert our animation, then used our story board as a guide to record the commentary. It was Sooooooo much fun! Watch our animations below.
We wanted to create our own animations and make a boxing ring. With our partners, we researched the size of a boxing ring and worked out a scale to create our own boxing ring model.
We had to measure accurately to make sure our boxing rings were steady, and used triangular gusset joints to support our structure.
It was a little tricky at times but we didn't give up! #ambitiousandcapablelearners
When we planned our topic, we asked to find out about other Welsh boxers from the past.
We used information texts, and website searches to research Welsh boxers that competed against Cuthbert Taylor during his boxing career and made our own top trumps cards. We had to decide on a points system and use our knowledge of place value and ordering to ensure we put the correct point values in each category before playing top trumps with our friends, it was lots of fun!
Then we used the top trumps cards to make a database about the Welsh boxers.
Some of our girls were invited to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David IQ building today. They took part in a range of STEM activities centred around engineering and motorsport! They had to present and take part in a pit stop challenge!
Thank you UWTSD for providing us with this opportunity #communitylinks #inspiringfutures
Article 29 - Your education should help you use and develop your talents and abilities.
Glenys and Deb came to school today to help us to 'STAY SAFE AND SPEAK OUT' they explained the different types of abuse.... physical, emotional, sexual, bullying and neglect.
We spoke about the types of worries a we might have and used bricks to represent the worries, putting them in the sack. We then used the sack of worries to talk about safe adults that we could talk to. For each safe adult, we removed a worry brick.
Article 12 - we have the right to a voice / opinion
Article 19 - we have the right to be protected from harm
Article 34 - we have the right to be free from sexual abuse
Article 37 - no one is allowed to punish you in a cruel or harmful way
Dan from Technocamps visited our school, he taught us about machine learning. With Dan's help, we programmed the micro:bits to recognise different boxing moves, including a hook, uppercut and jab. It recorded our punches data on the micro:bit.
Dan also explained how AI is always learning, and racism in technology. For example, when Snapchat was first developed they tested their algorithms on mainly people with white skin... this then caused the filters to change people with black skin to white.
Also Siri, couldn't recognise Scottish accents, however, apple didn't change any coding... they let Siri learn through machine learning and improve itself! How amazing is that?
To launch our topic, we had a fantastic day at Swansea Museum, The Waterfront Museum and the Dylan Thomas Theatre, as part of Theatr Na Nog's trip day.
We started our day at Swansea Museum, where Phil taught us about how Cuthbert Taylor was discriminated against because of the colour of his skin. Phil, spoke to us about the Windrush movement and explained how we wouldn't have some of our favourite foods etc if people hadn't moved around in the past and settled in Wales. We went on a hunt around the museum to find where some of the artefacts had originated from.
Then, we were met by a doctor from the 1920's, he checked our hands were clean and were were healthy before entering the classroom. He taught us about jobs in the 1920's and how life was different to ours today including school life.
We then looked at artefacts, dressed up and played some games... spinning tops was one of our favourites!
After lunch, it was time for the show! We all loved it! Cuthbert Taylor's story made us angry and sad that he wasn't allowed to fight for a British title because of the colour bar! It has generated a lot of discussion and we can't wait to continue our topic this term!
Thank you Theatr Na Nog for such a wonderful day, we think everyone should go to see the show!

We found clues in our school hall, there was a boxing ring, photographs, newspaper articles. In our groups, we predicted what the topic maybe about... we found out the topic was about Cuthbert Taylor, a black Welsh boxer, who was denied the chance to fight for the British title because of the colour of his skin.
We used padlet to record our ideas and what we wanted to learn. Our teacher then created a topic map with all of our ideas.
We can't wait to go and see the show next week!
