We started our topic with a treasure hunt! The objects found were all clues to what our topic is about. When we found everything we had big discussion about the objects found and what we may want to learn about them.
We had fun exploring water...filling, pouring and transporting water.
We read the story of Lubna and Pebble for Empathy Day. Lubna travelled on a refugee boat across stormy seas to escape war in her country. She made a friend using a pebble and gave it away to a new refugee when he needed a friend.
We made a comic strip version of the story in groups.
And we designed pebbles to give to our friends for when they felt lonely or sad.
We explored floating and sinking. We chose objects, explored them and predicted whether they would float or sink. We discussed what each object did and gave ideas of why.
We talked about safety on the beach. We decided whether the photos showed safe or unsafe things on the beach.
We visited the RNLI lifeboat Station in Mumbles. We learnt about the safety equipment used and got to try on some of the uniform.
We went to Mumbles Beach to see the pier, lighthouse and explore the rock pools.
We wrote sense poems about our trip to the beach.
We used printing and drawing to create a beach picture.
We read the story of "Tiddler", a fish who liked to tell stories that weren't true. We talked about the importance of telling the truth.
We looked closely at real fish and while drawing them, we learnt the names of different parts of the fish.
Using sticks and feathers to make boats in forest school. We tested them to see if they floated.
We read "Mr Gumpy's Outing" and figured out different ways to make amounts counting the passengers legs.
We read sea creature poems in "Commotion in the Ocean". We then used playdough and loose parts to make a sea animal.
We planned a family day to celebrate the end of our topic. We used all our creative work to create a mini gallery to show our families.
We made jelly and decorated them as a beach to give as a treat to our families.
We decided which learning games to share with our families. We had sea slime, fish and read the words, making foil boats, decorating sea biscuits and matching Numicon to beach numbers. We also sang "Llaw ar Lan Y Mor".
A Splash afternoon finished our topic perfectly! Water, bubbles and lots of fun!
